Anatomy
of the Ladybug
The anatomy of a ladybug is made up of eight parts, including the head, antenna, eyes, pronotum, thorax, elytra, wings, and legs. The spots on the ladybug may be found on other areas of the ladybug, the ones that are counted are the ones on the elytra. The wings of the ladybug are so thin that you can see right through them. They seem to be as shear as a see-through cloth. The wings are covered and protected by the elytra.
“The pronotum is part of the body that protects the head. It is often mistaken for the head of the ladybug” (Learn about Nature, 2014). The head of the ladybug is very small and has two white spots on both sides. Within the head are the eyes, mouth and antennae. It looks like their eyes but is not. The eyes are on the little head of the ladybug and they too have white spots.”The ladybugs can retract their heads somewhat under the pronotum much in the same way a turtle does, though not as far” (Learn about Nature, 2014, para. 2). When a ladybug is dormant or inactive they can appear more spherical as its head, pronotum and legs are tucked in. The active ladybug has its pronotum, head and legs extended outward giving them a oval body shape.
